Part of the Lancashire Lantern network, the Pioneers gives details of people who were famous local people in science, technology and innovation. These pioneers were either born in Lancashire or their endeavours made a significant contribution to the development of the County.

Born in Chorley, Lancashire 

1832 

Went to Liverpool as an apprentice grocer 

1839 

Opened first shop in Old Haymarket, Liverpool 

1847 

Opened shop in Old Hall Street Liverpool 

1849 

Opened 2 more shops, 1 in Liverpool and 1 in Ormskirk 

1851 

Opened shop in Hamilton Street, Birkenhead 

1855 

Opened shop in Fox Street, Liverpool 

1859 

Sold shops and became a partner in the sugar refining company, John Wright & Co. 

1869 

Dissolved partnership and started sugar refining company named Henry Tate 

1872 

Tate's refinery at Love Lane, Liverpool began operations 

1876 

Tate became licensee of the Langen patent for making sugar cubes 

1878 

Tate's new Thames refinery began operations, specialising in sugar cubes 

1881 

Tate moved to London leaving his sons in charge of the Liverpool business
