Sir James Mackenzie was born at Pictstonhill Farm in Scone, Perthshire on 12 April 1853 and was educated at Scone village school, Perth Grammar School and Edinburgh University. 

In 1887, he married Frances Bellamy Jackson and they had two daughters, Dorothy born in 1888 and Jean born in 1893.
